Japanese Road Signs: Common Mistakes in the Conversion Test

Updated: 2026-10

Most sign questions are about signs with similar names but different scopes. If you can tell apart three groups — Road Closed / Closed to Vehicles / No Entry for Vehicles, No Parking / No Stopping or Parking, and No Overtaking / No Crossing to the Right for Overtaking — you can answer a large share of this topic. This page sorts out the numbers and exceptions based on Japan's official Rules of the Road (交通の方法に関する教則) and the Road Traffic Act (道路交通法).

Four types of main signs, plus auxiliary signs

Japanese signs are divided into main signs (本標識) and auxiliary signs (補助標識). There are four types of main signs: regulatory (規制標識), instruction (指示標識), warning (警戒標識) and guide signs (案内標識). An auxiliary sign is attached below a main sign and limits it by time, day or vehicle type.

Similar pictures can belong to different types. The blue sign with a white pedestrian (横断歩道) is an instruction sign marking the crossing itself, while the yellow diamond with children (school or kindergarten ahead) is a warning sign.

TypeRoleExamples
Regulatory sign (規制標識)Prohibits or specifies a traffic methodClosed to vehicles, No parking, Maximum speed, STOP (止まれ)
Instruction sign (指示標識)Shows what is permitted or a designated placeSide-by-side riding permitted, Pedestrian crossing, Safety zone, Priority road
Warning sign (警戒標識)Warns of hazards aheadRailroad crossing ahead, Road work, School zone
Guide sign (案内標識)Shows place names, directions, distancesDirection and distance signs
Auxiliary sign (補助標識)Supplements or limits a main sign“8-20” (hours), “Except mopeds” (原付を除く)

Signs with similar names but different meanings

These pairs are tested most often. A sign prohibits only the act it shows and nothing more (for example, No U-turn prohibits only U-turns, not backing up).

SignWhat is prohibitedCommon trap
Road closed (通行止め)Pedestrians, vehicles and streetcarsPedestrians cannot pass either
Closed to vehicles (車両通行止め)All vehicles: cars, mopeds and light vehiclesBicycles cannot pass either
No entry for vehicles (車両進入禁止)Entry only from the side the sign facesUsed at the exit of a one-way road; the other direction is fine
No parking (駐車禁止, one diagonal bar)Parking onlyStopping (loading within 5 minutes, letting people on/off) is allowed
No stopping or parking (駐停車禁止, two bars)Both stopping and parkingEven stopping to let people on/off is not allowed
No overtaking (追越し禁止, with auxiliary sign)Overtaking itselfNot allowed even without crossing to the right
No crossing to the right side for overtakingOvertaking that crosses into the right sideOvertaking without crossing over is allowed
No U-turn (転回禁止)U-turns onlyBacking up is not prohibited

Signs and markings with numbers

Questions usually ask what a number means rather than the number itself. Maximum and minimum speed signs differ only by an underline, but their meanings are opposite.

Sign / markingNumber / meaningKey point
Side-by-side riding permitted (並進可)Up to 2 ordinary bicycles may ride side by sideNot for motorcycles; 3 or more abreast never allowed
Maximum speed (number only)Do not exceed this speedThere is also a 30 km/h-or-less version for mopeds
Minimum speed (number underlined)Do not drive slower than this speedOpposite of the maximum speed sign
Auxiliary sign “8-20”Applies only from 8:00 to 20:00No restriction outside these hours
Height limit (高さ制限)Measured including the height of the loadWidth limits also include the load
Weight limit (重量制限)Measured by gross weightIncludes people and cargo

STOP versus slow down

At an intersection with a STOP sign (止まれ / 一時停止), you must come to a complete stop just before the stop line, or just before the intersection if there is no line (Road Traffic Act, Article 43). Slowing down and checking is a violation. After stopping, you still must not obstruct traffic on the crossing road.

“Slow down” (徐行) is defined as driving at a speed at which the vehicle can stop immediately. The law gives no km/h figure, so a statement like “slow down means 10 km/h or less” is False.

When passing a safety zone (安全地帯) with pedestrians in it, your duty is to slow down; a full stop is not required. Driving into a safety zone is always prohibited, whether or not people are there.

In a section with a horn zone sign (警笛区間), you must sound the horn only at blind intersections, blind curves and blind hilltops. You do not keep honking; elsewhere the horn may be used only when unavoidable to prevent danger.

Lanes and road markings

A bus-only lane (専用通行帯) may still be used by small special vehicles, mopeds and light vehicles. Ordinary cars may not use it, except when moving to the side or center of the road to turn, or when unavoidable because of road work.

A bus priority lane (優先通行帯) may be used by ordinary cars, but you must leave it promptly when a route bus approaches. If traffic is so heavy that you might not be able to leave, do not enter it in the first place.

The yellow-framed “no stopping zone” marking (停止禁止部分) prohibits stopping inside it, but you may drive through. The marking that prohibits entering at all is the “keep out zone” (立入り禁止部分).

A white plate with a blue left arrow (左折可) means you may turn left even on a red or yellow light, while watching surrounding traffic. It is different from the blue One Way sign (一方通行) with a white arrow.

Common trap patterns

Almost every False statement in this topic follows one of these patterns. Identify the pattern first and you will answer faster.

  • Wrong target: side-by-side riding is for 2 ordinary bicycles, not motorcycles
  • Over-extended scope: No U-turn also banning backing up, or honking continuously in a horn zone — both False
  • Stopping vs parking: loading within 5 minutes is allowed under a No Parking sign
  • Ignoring the auxiliary sign: “Except mopeds” means mopeds may pass; outside “8-20” there is no restriction
  • Strength of the duty: STOP sign = complete stop; pedestrians in a safety zone = slow down
  • Definitions of numbers: “slow down” has no figure; an underlined number is a minimum speed

FAQ

Q. Can I stop to drop someone off where there is a No Parking sign?

A. Yes. Stopping to let people on or off counts as “stopping” (停車) regardless of time, so it is allowed under a No Parking sign. It is not allowed under a No Stopping or Parking sign (two diagonal bars).

Q. What is the difference between No Entry for Vehicles and Closed to Vehicles?

A. No Entry for Vehicles (車両進入禁止) bans entry only from the direction the sign faces, such as the exit of a one-way road. Closed to Vehicles (車両通行止め) bans vehicles from both directions.

Q. What does the auxiliary sign “原付を除く” mean?

A. It removes mopeds (原付) from the restriction. If a Closed to Vehicles sign has this plate, mopeds may still pass.

Q. How many km/h is “slow down” (徐行)?

A. The law sets no number. It is defined as a speed at which you can stop immediately. Treat statements that give a fixed number as False.
