Japan License Knowledge Test: What to Review the Night Before

Updated: 2026-10

Use the day before and the hours before the knowledge test (知識確認) to protect what you already know, not to learn new material. Review the three things that cost the most points – numbers, exceptions and look-alike terms – and do a final check of your documents. You need 45 of 50, so last-minute cramming cannot guarantee a pass. But a final review reliably removes avoidable mistakes.

The day before: do's and don'ts

What matters the day before is checking your weak spots and getting enough sleep. Cramming a new topic late at night tends to mix up the numbers you already learned and adds mistakes.

DoWhy
Write out the numbers table from memorySwapped numbers are the most common trap
Redo only the questions you got wrong beforeA question you missed twice is likely to trip you up again
Take one 50-question, 30-minute mock examTo reset your sense of timing. One is enough
Pack your documents and belongingsIf one item is missing, your application won't be accepted that day
Check the route to the test center and reception hoursArriving late may mean you can't take the test

Numbers to review

Questions often swap these numbers with those of another place or vehicle. Make sure you can state each number with what it applies to. Since September 1, 2026, residential roads without a center line have a 30 km/h statutory limit – be careful if you learned from older material.

NumberWhat it is
5 m / 10 mNo stopping or parking: 5 m from intersections and crosswalks; 10 m from railroad crossings, safety zones and bus stops
1 m / 3 m / 5 mNo parking: 1 m from fire alarms, 3 m from garage entrances, 5 m from hydrants and road works
30 m / 3 sSignal turns and U-turns 30 m ahead; lane changes about 3 seconds ahead
30 mNo overtaking before intersections, railroad crossings and crosswalks (at crosswalks, no passing either)
60 / 30 km/hCars on roads with a center line 60; cars on residential roads and mopeds 30
100 / 50 km/hMaximum (regular cars) and minimum on national expressways
0.15 mgLimit for driving under the influence (per liter of breath)
5 minLoading or unloading within 5 minutes counts as stopping
6 / 70 / 1 yearChild seats under 6; elderly mark 70+ (best effort); beginner mark under 1 year (mandatory)

Exceptions and trick questions to review

After numbers, exceptions and look-alike terms cost the most points. Each question below is answered wrongly if you only know the basic rule (answers included).

  • "Within 30 m before an intersection, you must not overtake even when driving on a priority road." → False (overtaking is allowed on a priority road)
  • "At an intersection with poor visibility to the left and right, you must always come to a full stop." → False (the duty is to slow down, 徐行)
  • "If a pedestrian is about to use a crosswalk, slowing down to let them cross is enough." → False (you must stop)
  • "Stopping to let people on or off becomes parking after 5 minutes." → False (it is stopping regardless of time)
  • "Stopping and parking are prohibited on steep slopes, both uphill and downhill." → True (no-overtaking and slow-down rules apply only downhill – don't mix them up)
  • "Drivers aged 70 or over must display the elderly-driver mark and are penalized if they don't." → False (best effort only)

Final document check (Tokyo example)

Required documents differ by prefecture and by the country that issued your license, so check the list you received when booking. The Tokyo Metropolitan Police (警視庁) common list is below. Originals are required, not copies.

Under the NPA guidelines, smartphones are restricted in the knowledge test room or must be switched off and put in your bag. If you want to review just before the test, bring notes on paper and put them away before entering the room.

  • Your valid foreign driving license (original), plus any expired previous licenses
  • Japanese translation (prepared by your embassy, JAF etc.)
  • Certificate of residence (住民票の写し) showing nationality etc., without your My Number, issued within 6 months
  • Passport (bring every old passport too)
  • Application photo (3 cm high × 2.4 cm wide, taken within 6 months)
  • Fees (Tokyo, regular car license: 2,500 yen application fee, 2,350 yen issuance fee after passing)

Can you pass by cramming the night before?

You need 45 of 50 correct – only 5 mistakes allowed. For someone learning Japan's traffic rules for the first time, one day of study is not enough to count on. Even experienced drivers should plan on roughly 1–2 hours a day for about 7 days.

If you fail the knowledge test, you have to book and apply again from the start. There is no "knowledge test exemption for 6 months" like the one after failing the driving test. If you feel unprepared, you can ask the prefectural police where you applied whether your appointment can be changed.

Make your final run match the real test

A last-minute mock exam isn't for raising your score – it's for getting used to the real format and time limit. Do 50 questions in 30 minutes, check that your first pass takes about 20 minutes, read the explanations for your mistakes and stop there.

menkyopass mock exams in English use the real 50-question, 30-minute format, with an explanation for every question. Your first mock exam and three topics are free.

FAQ

Q. How many hours should I study the day before?

A. There is no set number. Rather than cramming new topics, spend about 1–2 hours on numbers and past mistakes, then get a good night's sleep – that prevents more errors on the day.

Q. How many mock exams should I take the day before?

A. One is enough. The aim is to reset your sense of timing, so read the explanations for your mistakes and stop.

Q. Can I review on my phone right before the test?

A. Before entering the room, yes – but inside, phones are restricted or must be switched off and put away. Paper notes are the safer choice.

Q. What happens if I fail the knowledge test?

A. You book, apply again and retake the knowledge test. There is no exemption after failing the knowledge test.
