Japan License Knowledge Test Timing: 50 Questions in 30 Minutes
Updated: 2026-10
The knowledge test (知識確認) gives you 30 minutes for 50 questions – an average of 36 seconds each. If you agonize over every question, you will not reach the end, so use two passes: answer all 50 in the first 20 minutes, then spend the rest reviewing only the questions you were unsure about. Since it is true/false, the most important rule is to leave no question unanswered.
50 questions in 30 minutes = 36 seconds each
Under the National Police Agency guidelines, the knowledge test is 50 text-based questions within 30 minutes, and you pass with 45 or more correct. You can miss only 5, so every question left unanswered when time runs out pushes you further from a pass.
36 seconds covers reading, thinking and answering. Short questions take 10 seconds; questions with several conditions or a "however" (ただし) can take close to a minute. Bank time on the short ones and spend it on the long ones. To finish the first pass in 20 minutes (24 seconds per question), check your pace against these milestones.
| Time elapsed | Questions answered in the first pass |
|---|---|
| 5 min | About 12 |
| 10 min | About 25 |
| 15 min | About 37 |
| 20 min | All 50 (first pass done) |
A recommended 30-minute plan
Split the 30 minutes into three blocks. The key is to put an answer on every question in the first pass. If you run short of time at the end, any question with an answer still has a chance of being right.
How you answer (paper or screen, whether you can make notes, whether you can go back) may differ between test centers. Listen carefully to the examiner's instructions on the day and decide at the start how you will remember which questions to revisit.
| Time | What to do | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| 0–20 min | First pass: answer all 50 | If 15 seconds of thought doesn't settle it, enter a provisional answer and move on |
| 20–27 min | Second pass: review flagged questions only | Change an answer only when you find a clear reason |
| 27–30 min | Final check | Make sure nothing is blank or entered in the wrong place |
Question types that eat your time
What slows you down is usually not difficulty but the number of conditions. Read these types right to the end. For example: "When a stopped streetcar has no passengers getting on or off, there is no safety zone, and you can keep a distance of 1.5 meters or more from it, you may proceed slowly" stacks three conditions – and the answer is true.
- Long sentences stacking several conditions
- Sentences with exceptions such as "however" (ただし) or "except" (〜を除き)
- Sentences with two or more numbers (distance and time, speed and vehicle type)
- Double negatives ("need not", "it is not prohibited to…")
How to decide when you're unsure
A true/false question with no answer can never be correct. When unsure, run through these checks and commit to one answer.
During review, change an answer only when you recall a clear reason. Changing it out of vague doubt can turn a correct first answer into a wrong one.
- If it says "always" or "in every case", can you think of one exception? (If so, it is probably false)
- Has the subject (vehicle type, person) been swapped?
- Does the number belong to a different place or rule?
- Are look-alike terms used correctly – 徐行 (slow down) vs. 一時停止 (full stop), 駐車 (parking) vs. 停車 (stopping)?
What to check on review
On the second pass, don't reread whole sentences – scan the small words where traps hide. For example, "Within 30 meters before a crosswalk, not only overtaking but also passing is prohibited" turns on "not only… but also", and the answer is true.
- "Must" vs. "must not"
- "Only", "also", "or more", "within", "less than"
- "Uphill" vs. "downhill", "left" vs. "right"
- Mandatory vs. best effort (努力義務)
Practice your timing, not just the rules
Timing makes as much difference as knowledge. Every time you take a mock exam, set a 30-minute timer and note how long your first pass took. If you finish the first pass within 20 minutes and consistently score 45+, running out of time on the day is very unlikely.
The knowledge test is offered in many languages (the Tokyo Metropolitan Police, 警視庁, offers 20, including English). Practicing in the language you will test in brings your reading speed closer to exam conditions. menkyopass mock exams in English run 50 questions on a 30-minute timer, just like the real test; your first mock exam and three topics are free.
FAQ
Q. How many seconds per question?
A. 50 questions in 30 minutes is 36 seconds on average. To leave time for review, aim for 24 seconds per question on the first pass (50 in 20 minutes).
Q. What if I can't answer everything in time?
A. Unanswered questions are not counted as correct. You need 45 correct to pass, so put a provisional answer on every question during the first pass.
Q. Should I change answers when reviewing?
A. Only when you recall a clear reason. Changing answers out of nerves can turn right answers into wrong ones.
Q. Can I go back to earlier questions?
A. The answering method can differ by test center, so follow the examiner's instructions on the day. Either way, answering everything in the first pass keeps you safe.
